Cancer Centers

The National Cancer Institute has officially designated 61 institutions across the United States as Cancer Centers on the basis of scientific excellence and extensive resources focused on cancer and cancer-related problems. Institutions are recognized within one of three levels of designation.

Comprehensive Cancer Centers
Comprehensive Cancer Centers have broad programs involving and integrating three major areas of research: cancer control and population research; clinical research and prevention; and basic scientific research. They offer an extensive range of cancer treatment, clinical trials, outreach, education, and information. 38 institutions currently hold this designation.

Clinical Cancer Centers
Clinical Cancer Centers conduct clinical and basic scientific research. Clinical centers offer cancer treatment and clinical trials and may have programs in cancer prevention, control and population research. Many also have outreach, education and information activities. 15 institutions currently hold this designation.

Cancer Centers
Cancer Centers conduct basic laboratory research into the origin and development of cancer. 8 institutions currently hold this designation.

All NCI-designated comprehensive and clinical cancer centers provide clinical care and service for cancer patients.

There are also a number of other institutions and medical centers across the nation which undertake cancer treatment and research. Some of the other prominent cancer centers are listed below.
Comprehensive Cancer Centers

To be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center, the institution must secure a major funding grant from the National Cancer Institute in support of the development of its scientific infrastructure. The institution then must meet the following criteria:

* A program of cancer prevention and control research.
* A program of high-priority clinical trials for therapies with unusual promise.
* A record of innovative clinical research studies in the community served by the center.
* A mechanism for transferring research findings into clinical practice.
* A program of research training and continuing education for health care professionals.
* A strong core of basic laboratory research in several fields, such as biology, chemistry, immunology, and molecular genetics.
* A commitment to community services and outreach activities related to cancer prevention and control.
* A wide range of cancer information services for patients, health professionals, and the surrounding community.

Once the designation is received, the grant must be renewed every three to five years. Grant renewal requires that the institution be reviewed to determine that it still meets the qualifying criteria detailed above.
